The exhaust is one of the most impactful modifications you can make to a motorcycle — in terms of both sound and performance. Whether you ride a sports bike, a naked, a cruiser, or an adventure tourer, an exhaust upgrade can transform the character of your machine. At Pro Flo on Canal Road, Bradford, we build and fit custom exhausts for all types of motorcycle, and we’ve helped hundreds of West Yorkshire riders get the setup they’re after. Here’s everything you need to know before making the investment.

Why Upgrade a Motorcycle Exhaust?

Factory exhausts are engineered to satisfy a wide range of requirements: noise regulations, emissions standards, cost of production, and broad compatibility across different markets. The result is a compromise — often a heavy, restrictive system that doesn’t express what the engine is actually capable of.

Upgrading your exhaust can deliver several genuine benefits:

  • Weight reduction: A stainless slip-on can save 2–5 kg compared to a stock system. On a motorcycle, weight removal at the rear positively affects handling and mass centralisation.
  • Power gain: A properly specified full system with a matching ECU tune can realise 5–10% power gains on many naturally aspirated engines by improving exhaust gas flow and scavenging.
  • Sound character: This is often the primary motivation. Whether you want a deep, authoritative note from a cruiser or a high-revving bark from a sports bike, a custom exhaust can be tuned to deliver it.
  • Aesthetics: A polished stainless system looks genuinely premium and shows quality craftsmanship that no stock system matches.

Slip-On vs Full System: Which Is Right for You?

The most fundamental choice in a motorcycle exhaust upgrade is between a slip-on (replacing only the silencer) and a full system (replacing everything from the headers backwards).

Slip-on upgrades are the most popular choice for riders who want an improved sound and appearance without significant expense. They bolt directly onto your existing mid-pipe and headers, require no remapping in most cases, and can be fitted in under an hour. The performance gains are modest — primarily in top-end flow — but the sound transformation can be dramatic depending on the silencer specification.

Full system upgrades are for riders who want maximum performance benefit. Replacing the headers with lighter, more efficiently routed pipes changes the exhaust tuning and scavenging characteristics. Combined with a proper ECU remap, a full system on a modern inline-four can deliver genuine power gains across the rev range. The cost is higher, and fitting takes longer, but for performance-focused riders the result is worthwhile.

Road Legal vs Performance-Only: What You Must Know

In the UK, motorcycles used on public roads must comply with the Construction and Use Regulations regarding exhaust noise. The legal limit for motorcycles varies by age and category, but in practical terms, an exhaust that is clearly, significantly louder than standard is likely to attract police attention and could result in a prohibition notice requiring you to rectify the modification before the bike can be ridden again.

Many aftermarket slip-ons and full systems are supplied with a baffle or dB killer insert that reduces the noise level to legal limits while retaining improved flow characteristics over stock. Removing the baffle may push the bike over the legal threshold. We always advise on the legal implications of specific exhaust choices and can advise on systems that deliver excellent sound and performance while remaining compliant for road use.

Custom Fabrication at Pro Flo Bradford

Not every motorcycle can be served by an off-the-shelf exhaust upgrade. Older bikes, unusual imports, custom builds, and stripped-back cafe racer or scrambler projects often require bespoke fabrication. This is where our workshop on Canal Road comes into its own.

We build custom exhausts for all types of motorcycle — from classic British singles through to modern Japanese superbikes, American V-twins, and European adventure tourers. Every build uses T304 stainless steel, TIG welded for clean, strong, corrosion-resistant results.

The process involves assessing the bike on the stand, discussing the desired outcome (sound, performance, visual style, exit position), then designing, bending, and fabricating a system that fits precisely and looks the part. For cruisers, we can build traditional sweeping designs or more aggressive high mounts. For sports bikes, low-slung underseat or racing-style exits are achievable.

Cost: Custom vs Off-the-Shelf

Off-the-shelf branded exhausts for popular motorcycles can range from approximately £200 for a budget slip-on to well over £800 for a premium full system from names like Akrapovic or Arrow. These are engineered specifically for your model and often come with excellent quality, but they only exist for popular, current bikes.

Custom fabrication at Pro Flo is priced based on the complexity of the build, the materials used, and the time involved. For most single-cylinder and twin exhaust builds, a custom stainless system is competitive in cost with mid-range branded alternatives — and unlike a branded part, ours is made exactly for your specific bike with any configuration you choose. For four-cylinder and multi-header builds, costs are naturally higher.
