People are often surprised by what’s achievable when they first visit us at Pro Flo on Canal Road. Custom exhaust fabrication isn’t just for racing cars or show vehicles — it’s the most practical solution for thousands of everyday drivers in Bradford and West Yorkshire whose vehicles either can’t be matched by off-the-shelf parts, or whose owners simply want something better. Over 20 years, we’ve built systems for everything from a 1970s classic to a modern turbocharged hatchback.
What Types of Custom Exhaust Can We Build?
The short answer is: virtually anything. Our workshop on Canal Road is equipped to fabricate complete exhaust systems from scratch, or to replace individual sections where other parts of the system remain serviceable. The most common builds we carry out fall into several categories:
- Single system: The standard configuration for most cars — a single pipe running from the downpipe or catalytic converter back to a single rear exit. We build these for vehicles where no suitable replacement part exists.
- Twin exit systems: A popular choice for performance hatchbacks and saloons, where the visual impact of dual rear exits is as desirable as the sound character. We can add a genuine twin system or create a split design from a single flow.
- Sports and performance systems: Wider-bore pipework, free-flow silencers, and optimised routing for vehicles where performance gain is the priority.
- Straight-through systems: Minimal restriction designs for track-use vehicles and show cars. Note: these may not be road-legal and we’ll always advise clearly on this.
- Cat-back systems: Everything from the catalytic converter backwards — the most common upgrade for performance vehicles wanting improved sound and flow without touching the front end.
Materials: Why We Use T304 Stainless Steel
Every custom build at Pro Flo uses T304 grade stainless steel as standard. This is a conscious choice, not a marketing point. T304 contains 18–20% chromium and 8–10% nickel, which gives it genuine corrosion resistance rather than relying on coatings that eventually fail.
For Bradford’s climate — wet autumns and winters, road salt from the council gritters, and the damp air rolling in from the Pennines — T304 stainless is simply the right choice. A properly fabricated T304 system will outlast the vehicle in most cases. Customers who come back to us five years after a custom build to have something else done are often pleasantly surprised to see their exhaust still gleaming and solid.
We can also source specialised materials on request — titanium for extreme weight reduction projects, ceramic-coated mild steel for specific applications — but for the vast majority of builds, T304 stainless is the optimal balance of performance, longevity, appearance, and cost.
The Build Process: From Assessment to Road
When you bring your vehicle to us for a custom exhaust build, the process typically follows these stages:
- Vehicle assessment: We put the car on the ramp and examine the existing system, the vehicle’s underside clearances, hanger positions, and any specific challenges (low ride height, unusual routing, close proximity to components).
- Discussion and specification: We talk through what you want — sound level, exit style, performance goals, budget. We’re honest about what’s achievable and what it’ll cost.
- Template and pipe work: We bend and shape the stainless pipes to run correctly along the vehicle’s underside, working around the geometry of each specific car rather than adapting a generic shape.
- Welding: TIG welding produces cleaner, stronger joins than MIG and is what we use for all stainless fabrication. The welds are neat and fully penetrating.
- Fitting and mounting: The system is hung using quality rubber mounts and checked for clearance at all points.
- Test and inspection: We run the vehicle and check for leaks, rattles, and correct sound level before handing back.

One of the most common questions we receive is “can you do my vehicle?” — and the honest answer is almost always yes. We fabricate custom systems for:
- All makes and models of passenger cars, including older classics where parts are no longer available
- Performance and modified vehicles — turbo builds, engine swaps, lowered cars
- Vans and light commercials, including small fleets where consistency matters
- Motorcycles and sports bikes
- Motorhomes and campervans, including continental and American imports
- Agricultural and specialist vehicles
The custom fabrication approach means nothing is off-limits as long as it’s physically achievable and legal for the road. We’ve built systems for vehicles that the owner had been told “no parts available” by multiple other garages.
Custom vs Off-the-Shelf: Which Is Better?
For many common vehicles, a quality off-the-shelf stainless replacement is perfectly fine — it’s made to fit, it’s tested, and the cost is usually reasonable. We’ll always recommend this route when it’s appropriate.
But custom fabrication wins in several clear situations. First, where the vehicle is unusual, old, or has been modified in a way that standard parts don’t accommodate. Second, where the owner has specific performance or aesthetic goals that no stock part achieves. Third — and this surprises people — where the quality of available off-the-shelf parts is poor. Some budget replacement exhausts are made from thin mild steel that corrodes within two years. A custom stainless build at a modest premium will outlast three or four such replacements.
Budget for a custom exhaust build varies considerably depending on the vehicle and the complexity of the system. A straightforward cat-back on a common family car is considerably less than a full system for a classic or a twin setup for a performance machine. We give transparent quotes before any work starts, with no hidden additions.
Why Bradford Drivers Choose Pro Flo
We’ve been trading from 365 Canal Road since 2004 — over 20 years in the same location, serving the same community. Bradford has a strong culture of car enthusiasm, and we understand what drivers here want: work that’s done properly, priced fairly, and backed by genuine expertise rather than a script from head office.
Our team has worked on thousands of vehicles across West Yorkshire, and that accumulated experience means we can spot potential problems, offer practical alternatives, and build to a standard we’re genuinely proud of.
