A well-maintained car is safer, cheaper to run, and worth more when you come to sell it. Yet many drivers only think about maintenance when something goes wrong — by which point costs are often much higher than they would have been with routine care.
This guide covers the key maintenance tasks every UK driver should be aware of, with practical advice from our team at Pro Flo Exhausts & Tyres in Bradford.
No part of your vehicle affects safety more directly than your tyres. Four palm-sized contact patches connect you to the road, and their condition determines how well your car accelerates, brakes, and corners.
The UK legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central 75% of the tyre width. However, braking performance begins to significantly degrade below 3mm. Check tread depth monthly using a 20p coin — if the outer band is visible, you're approaching the limit. Most drivers should replace tyres at 2–3mm.
Check tyre pressure monthly (cold) against the figures in your owner's handbook or the sticker inside the driver's door. Under-inflated tyres wear faster, reduce fuel economy, and increase blowout risk. Over-inflation reduces grip and causes rapid centre-tread wear. Pressures are usually different for front and rear axles, and change when carrying heavy loads.
Visually inspect tyres regularly for bulges, cuts, embedded objects, and uneven wear patterns. Uneven wear (especially on one edge) often indicates alignment or pressure problems that will accelerate tyre degradation.
Your exhaust system does more than reduce noise — it controls harmful emissions and can affect engine performance and fuel economy. Signs of exhaust problems include:
At Pro Flo, we specialise in custom stainless steel exhausts that last significantly longer than standard mild-steel systems and won't rust out. Have your exhaust inspected if you notice any changes in sound or smell.
Correct alignment ensures your tyres wear evenly, your car handles predictably, and you're not wasting fuel fighting the natural tendency of the vehicle to pull one way. Alignment should be checked:
Air conditioning systems lose refrigerant gradually — typically 10–15% per year. After 2–3 years, most systems are noticeably less effective. A regas every 2 years keeps the system working efficiently. Also important: use your aircon regularly, even in winter, to keep seals lubricated and prevent stale odours building up on the evaporator.
Alloys are expensive to replace but relatively inexpensive to refurbish. Check them regularly for kerb damage, corrosion, or lacquer peeling — catching problems early means a simpler, cheaper repair. Cosmetic damage won't affect safety, but bent or cracked alloys must be assessed by a professional immediately as they can affect handling.
Bradford tip: Our local roads are rough on tyres and alignment. We recommend an alignment check every 12 months — pothole impacts can throw alignment out noticeably even without visible wheel damage.
Rather than waiting for the test and hoping for the best, an informal pre-MOT check can identify issues in advance. Common MOT failure points include tyre tread, bulb failures, worn wiper blades, and exhaust emissions. We're happy to give your car a pre-MOT once-over — just give us a call.
