Car air conditioning systems lose around 10–15% of their refrigerant gas every year, even without any fault or leak. Over two or three years this adds up to significantly reduced cooling performance — you’ll notice the air from the vents is no longer as cold as it once was, particularly in warm weather. The solution is an air con regas: a straightforward service that restores the system to full performance in under an hour.
What Is an Air Con Regas?
An air con regas is the process of removing the old refrigerant from your AC system, checking for leaks, and recharging it with fresh refrigerant to the manufacturer’s specified level. At Pro Flo Bradford, our AC regas service includes:
- Evacuation: The old refrigerant is recovered using specialist AC servicing equipment. We don’t simply top up — the system is fully evacuated first to remove moisture, contaminants, and degraded gas.
- UV dye leak test: UV dye is added to the system and a UV lamp is used to check for leaks at hoses, connections, the compressor, and the condenser. If a significant leak is found, we’ll advise you before proceeding with the recharge.
- Vacuum test: The system is placed under vacuum for a period to check it holds pressure — a drop indicates a leak.
- Recharge: Fresh refrigerant is charged to the exact weight specified by the vehicle manufacturer. This is measured precisely — both undercharging and overcharging affect performance and can damage the compressor.
- Performance check: We test outlet temperature to confirm the system is performing correctly after the regas.
Which Refrigerant Does My Car Use?
Most cars built before 2017 use R134a refrigerant. Cars built from 2017 onwards (when EU regulations changed) typically use R1234yf, which is a more environmentally friendly refrigerant but costs significantly more. When you book, we’ll check which refrigerant your vehicle requires — this is determined by the vehicle, not by your preference.

How Often Does Car AC Need Regassing?
The standard recommendation is every two to three years. However, if your car is regularly used and you run the AC frequently, you may notice reduced performance closer to the two-year mark. Conversely, if you rarely use your AC (running it in winter helps keep seals lubricated), the system may last slightly longer between regases.
Running your AC with low refrigerant is hard on the compressor — the compressor relies partly on the refrigerant itself for lubrication, and running it low accelerates wear. A regas is cheap insurance against a compressor replacement, which can cost £400–800+ on many vehicles.
Does a Regas Fix All AC Problems?
A regas fixes AC that has lost cooling due to normal refrigerant depletion over time. It won’t fix mechanical failures such as a failed compressor, blocked condenser, or faulty expansion valve. If the leak test reveals a significant leak, the leak must be repaired before a regas will be effective. We’ll always advise you honestly before proceeding with any work.
